Climbing site

Written by

Paklenica National Park is the most visited climbing center in Croatia, also popular outside Croatia. The close proximity of seawater gives this climbing site a special charm, making Paklenica Riviera an ideal place to combine climbing and water sports.

Today, there are about 600 well-equipped marked routes of different difficulty and length (from grade 3-9a), set in the carbonate rocks, so each climber can find something to his/her liking.

Most short sport climbing routes are situated in Klanci, the narrowest part of the Velika Paklenica canyon. The routes are easily accessible and therefore suitable for climbers with small children.
Crljenica sector is most suitable and especially interesting for climbing in winter.

The most famous rock for climbing in Paklenica is Anića kuk, with various routes up to 350 meters long – from unequipped and aid routes to modern, long, sport routes.

Many other long routes in the rocks of Debeli kuk, Veliki ćuk, Kuk od Skradelin and Kukovi ispod Vlake are also attractive for climbers.

The routes in Paklenica differ in terms of their equipment. Older routes are equipped with pitons and recent ones with spits.

The main climbing season in Paklenica begins in spring and lasts until late autumn.

Many climbers gather here around May 1st, for the International Climbers’ Meeting, and they take part in various events and competitions.

  • A useful option for climbers might be the 3-day and 5-day tickets available to purchase, as well as annual entrance tickets for Paklenica National Park.
  • Public institution Paklenica National Park ensures that the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service members are available at the climbing site on a daily basis during July and August, as well as during long weekends in other months (for Easter, Labour Day, the Feast of Corpus Christi, Pentecost, National Day of the Republic of Croatia and All Saints Day).

The history of rock climbing in Paklenica began as far back as 1938, when Dragutin Brahm, aka Raca, attempted to make the first ascent of the Anića Kuk wall, which unfortunately ended tragically. In 1940 Marijan Dragman and Slavo Brezovečki climbed the route that Brahm had envisioned and they named it “Brahm's Route” in his honour.

Dragutin Brahm (Zagreb, 26 August 1909 – Starigrad, 27 June 1938) was a member of the Alpine climbing section of the Croatian Mountaineering Society “Velebit”. He successfully attempted to ascend the north face of Triglav, as well as the Grossglockner before dying on the Anića Kuk wall.

Brahm's Route – the first route ascended in Paklenica.

It was not possible to access Paklenica during the WWII and the post-war years. Only after 1955 the alpine climbing activities resumed in Paklenica, mostly by Croatian climbers.
Many classic routes in Anića Kuk were ascended during the 1950s and 1960s, the most famous being: Mosoraški, Velebitaški and Klin.

M – Mosoraški route (grade V°) – according to legend, on 17 July 1957 members of the Alpine climbing section “Mosor” from Split - Boris Kulić and Boris Kambić – ascended this route with ropes they had untied from their mothers’ clothes lines and a few homemade pitons.
V – Velebitaški route (grade VI°) – ascended on 4-5 October 1961 by members of the Mountaineering Society “Velebit” from Zagreb: Nedjeljko Jakić, Matija Mlinac and Davor Ribarović.
K – Klin route (grade VI°) –  ascended on 4-8 October 1966 by Miroslav Pleško, Stanislav Gilić and Nedjeljko Jakić – the ascent took five days.

In 1959, the first Labour Day gathering of alpine climbers was held in Paklenica and the climbing camp was in Anića Luka meadow.

Members of the Mountaineering Society “Velebit”, Marijan Čepelak and Borislav Aleraj, conquered the route Brid Klina in Anića Kuk in the period between 26 April and 3 May 1973. At that time, this was the highest grade of aid climbing in Croatia (A3, A4) and it held a record in the duration of the ascent – 8 days.

Paklenica entered a new phase during the 1970s with increasing number of visiting Slovenian climbers. Franc Knez is one that particularly stands out – he climbed approximately 40 routes in Paklenica, which are still amongst the hardest (Kača 6a+).

Slovenian climbers are also credited for the hardest Croatian aid climbing routes ascended in Paklenica at the end of the 1980s. The most significant ones are Spomin, A2 (S. Karo, J. Jeglič, F. Knez), Tango Vertikal, A3 (S. Karo, S. Škarja) and Jogananda,
A4 (M. Praprotnik, M. Ravhekar).

In 1990 the Remy brothers – Swiss climbers – visited Paklenica and ascended two beautiful, difficult routes: Rajna and Welcome.

In the last two decades sport climbing has become increasingly popular and new routes are mostly short sport climbing routes. However, there is also a whole range of beautiful and well-equipped long climbing routes on almost all the rocks in Paklenica.

The route Il Maratoneta 8b+ is the most difficult short sport route in Paklenica. Since Maurizio “Manola” Zanolla climbed it for the first time in 1987, it has been repeated only three times.

Tips for climbers
•
Check your climbing equipment before you go climbing
•    Train regularly and climb only the routes which are suitable for your current skill level
•    Gather information about the routes you want to climb
•    Test your own and you partner's knowledge of handling the equipment and techniques
•    Warm up before climbing
•    Communicate with your partner
•    Protect your head (wear a helmet!)
•    For climbing long routes it is advisable to bring a set of nuts, some cams and ropes.

Code of conduct at the climbing site
•    Climbing is permitted only at the climbing site in Velika Paklenica canyon
•    Full climbing equipment must be used (helmet!)
•    Do not climb alone; solo climbing is prohibited!
•    Setting up new or changing existing routes without permission of the Public Institution is strictly prohibited
•    You climb at your own risk
•    We recommend you report all complaints and any possible flaws concerning the climbing site at the Reception desk at the Park entrance or send them via e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
•    All information about the routes is available in Paklenica Climbing Guide (author: B. Čujić, published by Astroida d.o.o., Zagreb)

PROTECT NATURE!
•    To prevent terrain erosion, walk only on marked routes
•    While climbing, be careful not to knock down any stones – you may hurt someone!
•    There are many endemic plant species on the rocks in the canyon. Don’t pick or harm them.
•    A large number of birds nest on the rocks. Don’t disturb them and if you come across a nest with eggs on the route, please inform us about it!
•    Due to the presence of rare or endangered animal or plant species, some routes may be closed for climbers.
•    Don’t damage trees and bushes
•    Take your rubbish with you, don’t leave anything behind
•    Noise also pollutes the environment. Don’t make too much noise (don’t shout) while climbing
•    Camping is not permitted in Paklenica National Park!

ADVICE OF CMRS IN CASE OF ACCIDENT:
•    Keep calm and keep others calm
•    Protect yourself and the injured person from any immediate danger (from falling, falling rocks, suffocating, cold, humidity, etc.) as best you can
•    Provide first aid to the injured person to the best of your abilities
•    Mark the location of the accident and the location of the injured person  (especially in winter)
•    Urgently inform the CMRS!

In case of an accident, call 112!

SAVJETI PENJAČIMA

Written by

Sigurnosna oprema:
Iako je kaciga nepopularna među sportskim penjačima, uvijek postoji i najmanja mogućnost ozljede glave (krušljiva stijena, penjanje više dužina, ...). Zato svakako stavite kacigu na glavu. Alpinistima je kaciga obvezni dio opreme.

Provjera opreme:

Provjeravajte svoje i partnerovo znanje rukovanja opremom i tehnikama

  •     Zabranjeno solo penjanje

Written by

Dragutin Brahm
                      Svladavanje Brid klina 1973. god.

Glavna penjačka sezona u Paklenici počinje u proljeće i traje do kasno u jesen.
